About Us

We are a regulator, and we were set up to protect the public. To do this, we keep a Register of health and care professionals who meet our standards for their training, professional skills, behaviour and health.

HP team We currently regulate the following professions: arts therapists, biomedical scientists, chiropodists / podiatrists, clinical scientists, dietitians, hearing aid dispensers, occupational therapists, operating department practitioners, orthoptists, paramedics, physiotherapists, practitioner psychologists, prosthetists / orthotists, radiographers, social workers in England and speech and language therapists.

Each of the professions we regulate has one or more ‘designated title’, which is protected by law. These include titles like ‘physiotherapist’ and ‘dietitian’.

Anyone who uses one of these titles must be on our Register.

A person who is not registered and who misuses a designated title is breaking the law and may be prosecuted. Click here for more information about protected titles.
2014-council Our Council develops and monitors strategy and policy and consists of 12 members (made up of 6 registrant and 6 lay members), including the Chair. In addition, the HCPC runs committees which help the Council with its work.
Registrants (group) If a registrant does not meet our standards, we can take action which might include stopping them from practising. This means that if you are unhappy with the care or services you are given, or worried about the behaviour or health of a registrant, you can always raise your concerns with us.
